i am sick

i can usually go almost a year with barely getting sick. but now seems to be the time. i have the flu. for the next two days i am home with the kids. i won’t do much of anything. i will make the beds and i will do the dishes – that always makes me feel on top of things. i won’t wear my pj’s all day (although i did get a lovely, comfy new pair for Mother’s Day).
but what i mostly hope to do is lie on the couch, while the kids play contentedly (ha ha!?) and watch Notting Hill, Love Actually or About A Boy. I am in the mood for lots of Richard Curtis movies. maybe even Girl In the Café, which isn’t a romantic comedy, but is also written by him and one of my favourite films. i was asked to say something on Sunday during our morning service for mothers day. this is some of what i said. and i mean it too:
If I have high expectations of them, I need to have high expectations for myself.
It is up to us to instill a sense of excellence in our children. It is up to us to set those high expectations, and that means meeting them ourselves.
One thing that is important to me is that we pass on the value of empathy to our children- the ability to stand in the shoes of someone else. It is so easy to get caught up in us, in me, that we forget about our obligations to other people, and to one another.
I’ve learnt that children see and hear everything that you do and say.
So becoming a mother, a parent, is full of the joy of seeing the world new again, but also becoming a parent has made me more aware of the way I live my life now that I am responsible for two little lives.
and on mother’s day, what a spectacularly gorgeous day i had. it was totally unexpected- we don’t really celebrate mothers/fathers day, so i felt very indulged upon. all i asked for was some time together as a family.
D got up early and lit the fire. he set the table with a beautiful old table cloth (vintage in the true sense of the word) and a dinner set i bought whilst i was at university. we had porridge which had been warmed on the fire, with caramelised banana and yogurt, followed by poached eggs with hollandaise sauce on home made bread. i was given new pyjamas and two pairs of ballet flats, one pair tan and the other white. and i bought some blanket ribbon and finished A’s blanket (the drag around with us everywhere we go blanket). i only have white, black and red thread, so the ribbon looks a bit dodgy, with my crooked white stitching, but who am I kidding - I am a novice. D likes it, and A thinks it is a nice snuggle (as far as I can tell by her lying face down on the fleecy side) and N tells me he wants to make something with the sewing machine when he is “big like mama”.
one day i will splurge and buy random coloured thread, squares of fabric, and then lay out all of my patterns and just. start. sewing.
i am hoping to finally make the Tessa Kiros cardamom buns i have been eyeing off in this cookbook for ages. or, since i don't feel so great, maybe just N’s favourite chocolate chip biscuits. (we are getting better at not eating too much of the mixture before we manage to make the biscuits!)
