hiatus

my posts have been random of late.  i often think of things i'd like to record here, but to be honest i just haven't had the motivation or inclination to actually do it.  i think it is time for a brief hiatus.  there is so much going on at the moment i just need to give my mind a rest.  not to say i will be completely absent here - i may publish a photo, record a new quote or song... but for just a little while i think i am going to take it easy.  i'll hijack David's iPAD and read blogs in bed.  a guilty pleasure.  i'll read over my own blog for a change and i'll decide what it is i want this space to record and think about where it is headed.  there are a few new blogs i'd also like to flick through. it should be nice.

random things... plus motherhood

Is anyone else loving Phryne Fisher as much as I am right now?  The stories are great and the characters are gorgeous! Phryne and Isabel Dalhousie are my heroines of choice. And lately they are both the perfect distraction / escapism from other things going on in life right now. (Namely my work, but I'm not comfortable talking about the details here).

Another good distraction are my kids. Audrey is loving The Grudffalo and The Gruffalo's Child right now. Nicholas has learnt a new song he has been teaching me.

Alice, where are you going? Upstairs to take a bath.
Alice, with legs like toothepicks, and a neck like a giraffe
Alice, got in the bathtub, pulled out the plug and then
Oh my goodness, bless my soul! There goes Alice down the hole!
Alice, where are you going? Glub, glub, gurgle!

The tune is quite catchy.

I read a quote the other day which reminded me to stop and make sure I make my children a priority right now. children are for enjoying, not enduring. I need to not get hung up on small things and to remember to praise the good things... This article is also a great reminder to be the mother you are, rather than the mother on blogs, facebook or even pintrest.

Right now, I have just got home from a day in Brisbane. David is catching up with an old school friend for dinner and the kids have a sleepover. I'm going to see what we have in the cupboard that looks appetising and watch some tv.

recent events

Soon I'll be back into the swing of things, but I have meant to post about this recent event here.  I am too tired to try and articulate it all now.

I have had a card with a quote from Aung San Suu Kyi above my desk at work.  Not this one, but it applies equally well:

Even though we don’t know what will happen, we need to carry on as best we can, without wavering, along the correct path. Even though we don’t know what will happen, it is right that we take part in this struggle. Because we believe that it is proper, we have all joined in. If you ask whether we shall achieve democracy, whether there will be general elections, here is what I shall say: Don’t think about whether or not those things will happen. Just continue to do what you believe is right. Later on the fruits of what you do will become apparent on their own. One’s responsibility is to do the right thing.
Aung San Suu Kyi
A colleague was in Myanmar for the by-election...

The idealistic me a few years back would see it as a leap for democracy.  A huge step for human rights.  The tired me, at the moment, is seeing another example of the way governments work - for their own good, no matter what.  And it has taken up way to much of my headspace this past month.

She would have been 78 today.

April 4, 2012

I've been in a bit of a blog rut lately... I just cannot be bothered blogging about much at all really.  I feel a change around the corner though.  I have a couple of sewing projects I need to want to get stuck into.  MY QUILT.  Let it be over already... I love it and want to see it on my bed (preferably with a complementary new cover and new cushions) but oh, the hand stitching... must finish it.And the cross stitch I piked up a couple of months ago - I really want to do it, but feel guilty when I am doing that and not my quilt.  Then there is the table runner I started cutting charm squares for... all the while thinking "what am I doing when I have so many unfinished projects??!"  All I can say is that it will be a busy winter.

I am sure I have listed a billion projects on my blog that I want to do.  I need to label those posts so I can bring the lists up easily.  maybe a label like U.F.O.

I am reading two gorgeous books at the moment.  One is called 'The Real Downton Abbey' and is written by the current Lady Carnarvon (can you imagine??) :)  When will the second season begin??
...and just for fun:

(I love Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders).

Also for my birthday was 'My Heart Wanders'.  Gorgeous photos, travel and a lovely introspective theme.

So what have I been up to since turning 40???  Fanticising about craft, stressing about foreign policy, wishing I was more patient with my kids than what I have been of late and making soup.

Dave had a wisdom tooth out late last week and now has an infection.  He can't chew easily so I've made two soups - simple ones.  A pumpkin and a tomato.  He made cauliflower.  Try this for something quick and tasty:

chop 1 brown onion and 1 clove of garlic.
cook in a tablespoon of olive oil for 3 minutes.
add two tins of diced tomatos, 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar, 1 tablespoon of caster sugar and 2 cups chicken stock.
boil for 15 minutes and it is good to go!  Don't forget crusty bread.
